History
[[Home life 1958-1969]]
Severus was born to Eileen (nee Prince) [b. 1931] and Tobias Snape [b. 1927] in a home that was neither supportive nor caring. His father, disgusted that his wife's "abnormality" was passed on to their son, was vicious and abusive. Snape never knew why his pureblooded mother married a muggle, and he never asked, spending most of his time avoiding both parents and holing himself in his room, where he studied and studied. Despite his father's prejudices, Snape had, through his mother, access to a wealth of knowledge. Her relatives and books provided Snape much of his childhood magical learning, and when he wasn't being forced to attend muggle school, he was practicing a variety of spells, hexes, and curses. The dark arts fascinated him utterly, even at a young age, and by the time he had reached eleven years of age he had two great ambitions in life: to be nothing like his father and to practice the Dark Arts until he was a master.
[[School life 1969-1976]]
School was both a pleasure and a bane for Snape; he loved being around other wizards and away from the squallor of his home-life, but he simultaneously could never seem to fit in. However, his allies in Slytherin were made young, for he claimed a pure ancestry and proved his worth through his extensive knowledge of the darker arts, especially curses. While at school he made enemies with James, Peter, Sirius, Remus, and eventually Lily, through seven years of mutual disdain, hatred, and bullying. Although Snape mostly kept to himself, his propensity to being a loner when not with fellow Slytherins and his total bookishness seemed to attract the cruelty of the Gryffindors. Unfortunately, it was during Snape's sixth year that Snape was tricked into following Remus into the Screaming Shack, where he was saved by James and indebted to him.
[[After school 1976-1978]]
It was also during school that Snape began to hear tales of Lord Voldemort, a rising dark wizard whose impact upon society was becoming stronger with each passing year. Fascinated and intrigued by one who might teach him even more about the Dark Arts, Snape set out immediately after graduation to seek out this man and place himself under his tutelage. Perhaps Voldemort saw something of himself in Snape, the half-blood wizard so desperately escaping home, or perhaps he saw the vehemence and honesty in Snape's desire to learn, but he was placed in a position of esteem and trust among his death eaters, a place rivaled only by Bellatrix. In 1977, Snape witnessed the death of Regulus Black, an event that disturbed him and brought the smallest worm of a doubt into his mind about those he served. However, expertly taught in legilimency and occlumency, he was able to shroud this doubt until it was genuinely crushed.
Barely twenty when he was whisked from his timeline into the future, Snape has no idea of many of the things that will mar his future. He knows nothing of double agency and nothing of prophecy; he has yet to hear of the birth of Harry or the downfall of Voldemort.
